This paper relates an experience carried out at a higher education setting, specifically involving 3rd-year students in the Early Childhood Education degree programme. In relation to this, the paper presents an educational model that takes into account the need to develop ethical and social competences and gives importance to interdisciplinary education in real contexts. To this aim, all the academic modules that form part of this degree programme devote 25% of their teaching time and evaluation to the development of an interdisciplinary project. La chiusura delle scuole che ha provocato un incremento significativo della povertà educativa ha sollecitato l’opportunità di pro-gettare interventi integrati di service learning per favorire il recupero e il potenziamento dei minori in difficoltà. 869 studenti del Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Scienze della Formazione Primaria dell’Università degli Studi di Palermo, sono stati coinvolti nella progettazione e nella realizzazione di percorsi didattici mirati, rivolti agli alunni “fragili” di 33 scuole palermitane. This paper illustrates a research method appropriate for researchers examining teaching practices and teacher training in poor countries. The method of research described here does not compare with large scale studies in terms of sample size, scientific rigor, and sophisticated statistical analysis. We believe, however, that it can, provide valid information sufficient in accuracy for policy making. Most importantly, we believe, this method offers a feasible way for national researchers to explore why teachers teach as they do in their country. In Spain, within the framework of the Strategy 2015, the implementation of scholarships, grants and wages especially adapted to the new situation of the European Higher Education, intended to ensure access to university education to those most disadvantaged social groups economically. This research makes an ex post facto, descriptive-comparative aimed at assessing the impact of the grant salary, as an economic factor, on equity, access and academic performance in the first year of college.
